First sentence

"In retrospect, the wax statues should have been a tip-off: perfect likenesses of British Prime Ministers William Pitt the younger, Sir Robert Peel, and Benjamin Disraeli, and original Kinks drummer Michael Charles Avory."

So begins my opus, The Unparalleled Exploits of Larynx Carboxyl, P.I. I've got a good feeling about this one.

"Wally Warner stepped out of the apartment building located at 55 Central Park West and stared up into the sky."

Boring opening line, but I've managed to cram 1576 words full of setting descriptions while neglecting to develop characters and advance the plot. This has winner written all over it.

Seriously? Only two of us have posted our first sentences? Weak.

"There's nothing like spending time with your family to make you appreciate your friends."

Second sentence: "Furthermore, as Jenny McIntyre was about to have the misfortune of finding out first-hand, there's nothing like spending time with hungry, wounded grizzly bears to make you appreciate your family--or, for that matter, anyone who doesn't have razor-sharp claws and weigh more than a ton."

My novel is going to have words in it. Also, if I don't finish by the 18th, the end of it will be in French.

My 3 year old son appears to have deleted everything I had written but my title page... I am not a happy camper right now. Before that happened I believe my first sentence was: "This is how it begins."
